Original article: Platinum Games originally came up with the idea for Scalebound way back in 2006, but they’ve struggled mightily to bring that idea to fruition. The project has been pushed aside in favor of other games multiple times, but eventually it began its life anew as an Xbox One exclusive. Microsoft and Platinum planned to launch Scalebound in 2016, but it was delayed to 2017 almost exactly a year ago, and we’ve heard very little about it since then. According to multiple different sources, Scalebound has once again hit a major development setback.

This story all started earlier this afternoon when Liam Robertson (known for digging up the truth behind cancelled video game projects for Unseen64) tweeted out that
Scalebound was “in trouble” and possibly cancelled. Robertson went on to say that the situation is “nasty business,” and he plans to release a video detailing it later. After Robertson’s tweets, Kotaku ran a similar story citing “several sources,” and they included a response from Microsoft indicating that news would be shared soon. Reliable leaker Shinobi retweeted Kotaku’s article, stating that he had heard the same last week. Much like Robertson, he called the situation “not pretty.”

Since then, Eurogamer has stepped forward with a report claiming that Microsoft and Platinum Games have officially dissolved their
Scalebound partnership. According to Eurogamer, the relationship between the two companies has “dramatically soured” in recent months. Eurogamer goes on to say that several senior members of the development team were forced to take a month away from the pressure of the project’s heavy workload last fall, and the project fell even further behind as a result. Development of the game reportedly ceased entirely before the end of 2016.

It’s unclear whether the project can still be revived at this point, but the version of the game we’ve seen so far will reportedly not continue.

Update: Shortly after this story broke, Microsoft released an official statement to IGN. You can read it below:

“After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences.”

Scalebound as we know it is officially cancelled. IGN pressed on, asking whether the IP belongs to Microsoft or Platinum, but a spokesperson replied “we do not comment on the details of our business agreements with partners.” Microsoft also declined to explain why they chose to cancel the game.
