Sony’s PlayStation Classic hasn’t been wowing reviewers. While there are certain tiny flaws with the system that add up, the main problem most reviewers and consumers have is the selection of games. Most of the PlayStation’s iconic and bestselling games are missing for one reason or another. Now that dataminers have their hands on the systems, however, they’ve discovered evidence that a total of thirty-six games were cut from the PlayStation Classic.

Dataminers posted the alleged datamine on GitHub, showing off thirty-six games that still have references in the system’s coding.

  • Colin McRae Rally
  • Crash Bandicoot
  • Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

With a lineup that includes two Crash Bandicoot games, Vagrant Story, and Silent Hill, it’s a bit disheartening to think that this is what could have been. The lineup we have is less than half the size of what Sony might have originally planned. Certain games in this lineup, such as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, may have been removed due to complex licensing issues, but the others were more likely removed due to the numerous remasters either already released or in development.

It’s a shame that Sony did not include some of these gems, especially since the PlayStation Classic uses an open-source emulator as its base. Sony may be able to update the PlayStation Classic with some of these titles at some point, but most signs imply they won’t. As such, we’re probably stuck with the twenty games included at-launch.

Hi, I'm Mark. I'm like Statler and Waldorf if they were one person, except cuter. I'm an aspiring author, a Nintendo fanboy, and a recovering Sonic fanboy. But you can never really recover from that. I main Lucina in Smash Bros, and I think that says more about me than anything else can.
