In a surprise announcement today, SEGA has revealed Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice as a new Nintendo 3DS-exclusive entry, to be released at some point later this year.

This new Sonic game is being developed by Sanzaru Games, the people who developed last fall’s Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal for 3DS. In this new title, players will take advantage of the elements of fire and ice in order to race through stages, create platforms, and clear obstacles. The eponymous blue blur will once again be accompanied by his friends Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Sticks, as they face off against the nefarious Doctor Eggman, as well as a new robotic villain, D-Fekt.

You may remember that last year’s Sonic Boom games didn’t do all too well. The TV series, however, was recently renewed for another season on Cartoon Network. Here’s hoping that Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice improves upon the previous entries and captures more of the TV series’ charm!
