Every month the NPD Group highlights some of the top-selling video game software and hardware in the United States. Now that 2018 is in the rear view mirror they’ve crunched the numbers on the total revenue generated by the video game industry in the United States throughout the year. As it turns out, 2018 was both a record-setting year and a major milestone year for the video game industry.
Between hardware, software, and peripherals, the US video game industry generated an incredible $43.4 billion last year, up 17% from the year before. This is a new record, but that impressive figure extends beyond just video games in terms of its relevance. As it turns out, $43.4 billion is the same amount generated by the US film industry in 2018. In other words, the video game market is now just as profitable as the movie market.
