Last month, Takashi Iizuka confirmed that the next major Sonic the Hedgehog game would not see release until 2017, with only Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice to tide fans over until the next year. Tonight’s 25th Anniversary party for the franchise revealed Sonic Maniaa 2D retro-inspired Sonic title with Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games at the helm—right when the celebrations began.

However, the night ended with a bang when Project Sonic 2017 was finally shown off to fans at the House of Blues and those watching from home with a brand new reveal trailer. The untitled Sonic game is being developed by Sonic Team themselves, and will be launching in the holiday season of 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and the Nintendo NX.

Project Sonic 2017 is one of few games known to be developed for the NX, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild from Nintendo and a new Just Dance game from Ubisoft. Iizuka also specified that the game is not a sequel to Sonic Generations.

Jeffrey is a writer for Gamnesia and The Sonic Stadium, and a pianist obsessed with video game music. Loves all things Nintendo to a fault, and enjoys long walks on the Green Hill Zone. Pretty much Gamnesia's resident Sonic fan, my dude.
