Nintendo is best known as a video game company, but they actually see themselves as an entertainment company, and lately they’ve been looking to expand their IP into movies and TV shows. We haven’t seen much progress in this venture, but things are apparently coming along nicely behind the scenes, and a recent Nintendo survey asked fans if they’d be interested in a Nintendo original video series.
Nintendo’s future movies and films could be in-house projects, like the
Pikmin animated shorts, but it’s likely that we’ll see them team up with established film-making partners. Who should they trust to handle their characters with care? Roy Lee, producer of The LEGO Movie is putting his name up for consideration. During a panel at DICE 2016, Lee was asked what his dream project would be:
“Mine would be Nintendo. I think Zelda, Mario, and the whole universe of characters would be perfect for a Lego Movie type of [film]. I don’t have the rights to it, but I would love to. That would be my Holy Grail.”
— Roy Lee
