Fans eagerly awaiting more information on the release of the newest game from Ico and Shadow of the Colossus creator Fumito Ueda woke up to great news this morning: A Kotaku.com report that The Last Guardian was listed as an exhibit at 2013’s Electronics Entertainment Expo.
Unfortunately, their joy was short-lived. Famed gaming news website Kotaku contacted Sony Computer Entertainment America and Europe to confirm the listing on E3Insider.com, only to be told that the information was “pure speculation”. Following this assertion, the listing (pictured below) appears to have been removed from the website.
This is the latest disappointment plaguing The Last Guardian, a game that has been in development since 2007. Despite the release of several screenshots and trailers from 2009 to 2011, no new footage of the title has been revealed in the last 2 years. While Ueda was quoted as saying that The Last Guardian was scheduled for a late 2011 release, the date has come and gone with little fanfare. In fact, the game has not been seen in public since the 2010 Tokyo Game Show, prompting fans to fear its cancellation. These fears were further cemented with Fumito Ueda’s departure from Sony in 2012. However, the designer has stated as recently as February that he continues to work as a creative director on the game in a freelance capacity.
For those unfamiliar with Ueda’s previous offerings, the director first stepped into the spotlight with Ico, a Playstation 2 title released in 2001. Ico was a three-dimensional action-adventure platformer that challenged gamers to take on the role of a young boy and escape from a labyrinthine castle. Players were also tasked with escorting a young girl called Yorda to safety, defending her from shadowy creatures who sought to impede the duo’s flight.
Ico‘s successor, Shadow of the Colossus, was released on the Playstation 2 in 2005. While the game’s connection to Ico was unclear, it featured similar art and gameplay. The story follows a young man named Wander as he journeys on his trusted mount to the Forbidden Lands, bearing the corpse of his beloved. There, he begs the aid of a mysterious entity, who tasks the hero with defeating 16 gigantic creatures known as Colossi in order to restore his love to life.
The Last Guardian‘s gameplay is partly modeled off the interaction between Wander and his horse, Agro, in Shadow of the Colossus. Trailers depict a male youth befriending a giant griffin-like creature known as Trico, which is said to be both helpful and adversarial to the boy. While few details about the game are known, fans hope that the title will rival its predecessors in style and quality.
Do you think we’ll get to see The Last Guardian at E3 this year? Is the game destined to be cancelled? Let your voice be heard in the comments!
