Nier: Automata came out earlier this year and has become an overwhelming success, with the gaming receiving widespread critical acclaim and publisher Square Enix announcing a few days ago that it has shipped over 2 million units already. It sounds like that success is unlocking new doors for the franchise, as Square Enix has now posted a new hiring notice to its website that strongly suggests a new Nier project is on the way.

The hiring notice itself is specifically looking for someone who can handle “NieR-related product scenario creation, as well as planning work.” That on its own would be enough to get fans excited, but that’s not the only update to Square Enix’s site. Over on the recruitment page for Square Enix Business Division 6, new messages have been posted from Nier director Yoko Taro and series producer Yosuke Saito, and they contain some very interesting details.

“Hello. NieR series director Yoko Taro here. Thanks to everyone’s support, it appears that we will be carrying out various developments in regard to NieR. Nonetheless, there are limits to what lazy Yoko can do on his own. So I told Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito, “I can’t handle ANYMORE,” and now I get to round up a team of people to work with me, so I’m putting out a call for talented individuals.” — Yoko Taro

“I have consulted with Yoko. What will we do with NieR from here on? This hit was a one-hit wonder, wasn’t it? We’ve hit our peak and there’s no going higher, that must be it. Things like that. But it definitely feels like there are a great many people waiting on the world of NieR. No, I’m sure of it.

“That said, Yoko is not God. He’s human. He sometimes cries, and he sometimes gets discouraged. I’d like to take this opportunity to recruit those who could help Yoko and together weave the world of NieR, so we have now begun “NieR-related product scenario staff recruitment.”” — Yosuke Saito

With them noting that a whole team is being assembled for this new project, it definitely sounds to me like something more substantial is in the works for the Nier franchise—yes, it could just be a big piece of DLC, but I know I’m not the only one hoping that this indicates a third entry is kicking off development. While they stop short of actually confirming that a new entry is in the works, these messages certainly give fans of the franchise reason to hope for such an announcement to come in the near future.

Tyler Meehan
Tyler is verbose. He apologizes for that. Tyler "Alpha" Meehan's first experiences with gaming came from his cousins' NES and the Mario games that went with it. They were fun, but merely brief distractions while on the road (yes, they had an NES in their car. It was awesome, and he was jealous). Still, nothing compared to his Star Wars books. Those were good days. Good days... The Zelda series soon became his primary obsession fascination, but additionally he was soon introduced to text-based RPGs by one of his schoolmates. Discovering that he had a knack for the English language and a strong love of telling stories, he started putting effort into writing his own storylines. That all got put onto the backburner, though, when he discovered the Zelda online community, particularly The Desert Colossus's Hyrule Adventures 2, an online text RPG based in the Zelda world. He joined under the pseudonym of "Alpha" and soon became one of their lead writers, going so far as to join the moderator staff and, in a year's time, become the head administrator of the RPG. During this time, Twilight Princess was released, and he joined several other TDCers in posting their thoughts on the game - his "Twilight Impression Posts" lasted for several months and were well received by the community. Staying on even after the webmaster was forced to retire, he continued to provide occasional news posts and articles for the site, until it became clear that the site was dying. He turned his focus back to Hyrule Adventures 2 and his college studies, until the latter forced him to stop work on the former. Tyler graduated a few years ago from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelors in Computer Science, and now serves as a software engineer for a rather large company that he doesn't feel like telling you all about (he's a jerk like that sometimes). His love of gaming and writing still strong, he joined the Zelda Informer staff in early 2013 to write a walkthrough for The Wind Waker, but later began using his English skills to become ZI and Gamnesia's first dedicated Copy Editor.
