In a recent interview with denfaminicogamer (a Japanese site), famed director of Kirby and Super Smash Bros. Masahiro Sakurai may have indirectly revealed what he is working on for his new project. In the interview, Sakurai explains that he sometimes purchases figures for reference in his work. More importantly, he recently purchased a mecha figure based on the anime Ginga Hyōryū Vifam, or Galactic Drifter Vifam, to help with his next project.
Unfortunately for all of you mecha fans, Sakurai went on to clarify that he is specifically using the figure’s rifle as his reference point. While that does not rule out a new mech game from Sakurai, it definitely does not confirm that he is working on one. The rifle can imply quite a few genres of game, most obviously some kind of a shooter. Regardless, we now have an idea of what Sakurai may be working on right now.
If Vifam sounds at all familiar to you, it is actually a short-lived 80’s anime made by the creator of Mobile Suit Gundam, Yoshiyuki Tomino. While Tomino has publicly stated his distaste for the gaming industry in the past, it certainly would be interesting to see if the legendary mech designer ends up involved in Sakurai’s project in some way. Please keep in mind that any connection made here is purely speculation, though.
