For the third year running, SEGA will be touching down at Austin, Texas and making another appearance for their mascot franchise at South by Southwest in March. “Gotta Go Fast: The Official Sonic the Hedgehog Panel” is where Sonic fans and SXSW attendees can get the world-exclusive first look at the roadmap for the Blue Blur in the year ahead, citing that “Sonic is back, and ready to take 2018 by storm.”
Representing SEGA on the ground as speakers are Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, accompanied by SEGA of America’s Aaron Webber, Austin Keys, and Jasmin Hernandez. Special guest and Sonic Mania animation director Tyson Hesse will also be attending.
As for what to expect from the Gotta Go Fast panel, Iizuka and co. are set to provide “an update on last year’s strong performance” of 2017’s hallmark games for the franchise, Sonic Mania (which we loved!) and Sonic Forces (which we sadly didn’t love as much). While this could possibly not amount to a whole lot, there are rumblings within the Sonic fanbase of new DLC coming to the games; the Steam Database page for Mania has mysteriously been updated last December with a new “Project Plus” listing, and there is always a possibility Forces could receive more new content in the near future.
The panel will also touch on “what comes next for the fastest blue hedgehog,” but the description on the SXSW webpage does not allude to much. One of the obvious topics of discussion could entail the upcoming line of Sonic comics from IDW Publishing, which is expected to premiere in April according to solicitations. Also, the Sonic Boom cartoon wrapped up its second season in November 2017, but there is no official confirmation at this time as to whether the show will be renewed for a third. Finally, there exists a slight chance we might finally know more about the Tim Miller-directed Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which Paramount Studios has since acquired the rights to after Sony Entertainment put the film into turnaround.
