Today’s Rare is drastically different from the company that cranked out a steady stream of hits for Nintendo back in the 1990s, but in pushing forward they don’t want to forget about where they came from. The Microsoft-owned developer is currently working on a pirate game called Sea of Thieves that’s quite different from what we’re used to, but Rare is including some references that pay homage to their classic titles.

Speaking during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con,
Sea of Thieves art director Ryan Stevenson revealed that one of the ways the Xbox One exclusive will reference fan-favorite games is with unique figureheads players can equip on their ships. Examples given during the panel included a pirate-themed take on Joanna Dark from Perfect Dark and a ferocious bear holding a bird crest, referencing Banjo-Kazooie.
