Pictured here is a Canadian advertisement from Wal-Mart listing the Wii U Basic Set at $199, which is a $100 price cut. This is listed to take affect on August 2nd, and there has been no word yet on if the cut will take place in other countries besides Canada.
This is a huge price reduction and it remains to be seen if other retailers will follow suit. Nintendo has adamantly denied claims of possible price cuts, and of dropping the Wii U Basic Set all together, but this could be evidence of them changing their minds. Wal-Mart’s price cut could be the harbinger of an across-the-board cut, or of the discontinuation of the Basic Set, but we will just have to wait and see if Nintendo has any of those things planned.
Personally, I think a well-timed price-cut could really help the Wii U take off by the end of the year, especially when coupled with the first-party titles that will be making their way onto the console over the upcoming months. Only time will tell if a price-cut is seen as the answer, though.
What do you think? Is a price-cut a waste for the Wii U? Or do you think that the console desperately needs it?
