When Nintendo announced its first mobile title to-be earlier this year, more than a few fans were disappointed in Miitomo. Rather than utilize one of its stronger IPs and characters, Nintendo has chosen to center their first foray into the smartphone gaming market around Miis in a social media application. Despite the criticisms, President of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aimé has defended the concept, claiming that it “makes so much sense.”

While discussing how Miitomo fits into Nintendo’s approach to the mobile gaming market, Reggie had the following to say:

“At its heart, people are using [smart devices] as a way to stay connected with others through a variety of different means. We think we can provide an experience that’s differentiated in the marketplace, and it leverages what the device does well. And certainly we will bring our best IP into the smart device world, but we’re going to do it in a way that leverages what those devices do, that enable a play style that makes sense. That’s what critically important to us.” — Reggie Fils-Aimé
