According to the Asahi Shinbun, one of Japan’s more prominent newspapers, the new Nintendo and DeNA smartphone partnership is due to release a smartphone title “within the year.” The article says they will be working together on a title that makes use of Nintendo’s characters, though it doesn’t go into great detail on which studio will be spearheading the actual development. It is also yet a mystery which characters will be getting the smart-device treatment, though knowing Nintendo I expect we’ll see Mario-related content before anything else. The article also mentions that the two companies plan on “long term cooperation,” and will be exchanging some stock as part of the deal with the combined investments worth some 22 billion yen (>181 million USD).

One of my earliest memories with games was just after Pokémon had come out in the states for the first time. I remember, after having watched the show for a couple weeks, stumbling across a friend with an original Gameboy playing Pokémon Red version using a Weedle. When he told me he was playing Pokémon, I told him I didn't know there was a Pokémon that had a pumpkin for a head. Boy games have come a long way. Speaking of games, I also contribute to making them somewhat professionally, and ocassionaly write about them. You should see some of that games writing stuff, I hear it's real popular with the kids these days.
