The NPD Group has released its report for the month of February, 2018, highlighting hardware and software sales data in the United States. February typically isn’t a very exciting month in the video game industry, as few major games are typically released and profits are typically lower, but this report contained one impressive stat for Nintendo. After one year on the market, Nintendo Switch is officially selling at a record-setting pace!
You may remember that back in January Nintendo of America issued a PR statement declaring that
Nintendo Switch was the fastest-selling console in US history. It’s been a little over two months since then, and it’s been one year since Nintendo Switch hit the market, and the NPD Group is now officially backing Nintendo’s claim.
“Nintendo Switch remains on a record-setting sales pace. Over the first twelve months in market, Nintendo Switch has achieved the highest installed base for a console platform in history.”
— NPD analyst Mat Piscatella
We still don’t have exact sales numbers for Nintendo Switch in the United States, but we do have some rough estimates from Nintendo. Their most recent
Consolidated Financial Highlights (covering sales through December 1st, 2017) noted that Nintendo Switch had sold 5.94 million units in “The Americas.” Switch has had more than two months since then to tack on extra sales, but of course not all of those sales are from the United States. The fact that Nintendo hasn’t officially announced that they’ve passed the 5 million milestone in the US might suggest it hasn’t yet happened, but that’s just conjecture.
