During the recent Nindies Showcase, we were shocked and delighted to learn there’s a new Zelda crossover game on the way. Unlike Hyrule Warriors, the latest Zelda crossover wasn’t made with another AAA developer, but an indie team instead. Nintendo is teaming up with Crypt of the NecroDancer developer Brace Yourself Games to make Cadence of Hyrule.

The Legend of Zelda is one of Nintendo’s most cherished and profitable franchises, so handing its characters over to an indie developer is no small move by Nintendo. Will this open the door to more Nintendo/indie collaborations in the future?

It sure sounds like that’s a possibility! Kirk Scott is Nintendo’s Manager of Publisher and Developer Relations, and his main priority is working with indie developers. When asked about the possibility of Cadence of Hyrule starting a trend, Scott was overwhelmingly positive.

“I hope so. I totally hope so. Yeah, this is great. I think this is validating for a lot of indies out there.”
— Kirk Scott

Nintendo’s rich catalog of popular games stretches back decades, which means they’ve been inspiring game developers for nearly the entire history of the industry. Numerous indie developers have created retro-styled, Nintendo-inspired games over the years with great success. Getting the chance to team up and work on an actual Nintendo IP would be a dream come true for many, and now that’s a very real possibility.
