Nintendo is shaking their online infrastructure up, replacing longtime rewards program Club Nintendo with a new and improved membership service called My Nintendo. To interact with My Nintendo, you’ll need a fancy new Nintendo Account. Nintendo has already launched these new ventures in Japan, and they’ll be following suit in the West soon. In fact, you can already register for a Nintendo Account right now.
Nintendo has been offering Japanese gamers with Nintendo Accounts 10% back (in spendable points) on digital purchases, and they’ve also offered personalized coupons and birthday discounts. In digging around the Nintendo Account website, it appears that they’ll also be giving players “missions” to complete. If you create a Nintendo Account and then access the “Delete Account” option, Nintendo warns you about all the things you’ll be losing, including
“Mission status, points, and rewards in the My Nintendo rewards program.” We’re not sure at this time if these missions will be similar to achievements or if they’ll be something new entirely. Nintendo has not yet clarified what we can expect, but we’ll update you as more information becomes available.
