We recently uncovered some off-screen gameplay footage from the E3 floor taken by TWD98 (Troy 98). The player goes through several levels from the recently-announced Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U, and through his playing is able to demonstrate what new mechanics exist, as well as the returning ones, including snaking.

For those who aren’t aware, snaking is the term for mini-boosting several times in a row in order to get around the track as quickly as possible (excluding power-ups, of course). It is a very common tactic used by players, especially when playing online.

The video (which can be seen above) starts off on the character select screen, which shows some of the playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Toad, Koopa Troopa, Daisy, Toadette, Wario, and Waluigi. In the demo there is a mix of kart and motorcycles. The graphics look astounding, and after a bumpy start Troy is able to quickly get a hang of the controls (using the GamePad). The three levels shown are: a race track around the perimeter of a castle, a town with trollies, and the inside of a different castle. The levels are beautifully detailed.

Obviously one of the new features is the hovering, used when driving on walls or underwater. The hang glider makes a return, as do coins. At one point the player comments that the game “feels faster.” He also mentions that the gyroscope function of the GamePad works when flying with the hang glider.

There is a lot going on just in this demo, and it seems that the newest installment in the Mario Kart series will be as interesting as ever. Are you excited for the new game to come out? What do you think about the gameplay? Let us know in the comments below.
