In a recent interview with Asahi Shinbun, Nintendo’s president, Tatsumi Kimishima, opened up about the gaming giant’s plans for video content in the near future. Kimishima revealed that they’re
looking into more than just movies, but aren’t interested in licensing their characters. While Kimishima didn’t reveal much about specific plans, he did hint that live-action content is out of the question.

This is in part due to the disaster that was the
Super Mario Bros. movie. According to Kimishima:

“That live-action film didn’t do particularly well at the box office. From now on we’d like to do things ourselves more than just license something.”
— Tatsumi Kimishima

Though Nintendo would like to do more than license their IP, they are open to partnering with other companies:

“That could be an option. That’s not to say it absolutely must be Hollywood; we’ll be able to discuss more once things are finalized. However, we’d like to work together with partners who can be successful on a global scale.”
— Tatsumi Kimishima

In fact, it seems that Nintendo would like to do something similar to Disney or Pixar. Kimishima says that it’s something Nintendo will keep in mind as they move forward:

“We have a strong stable of IP, so we’d like to be able to do something like them. So we’ll keep that in mind as we work towards making this a reality.” — Tatsumi Kimishima

To top it all off, Kimishima was asked specifically about making these projects live-action, to which he replied,
“We’ve already tried that, so perhaps not this time.” It certainly seems like Nintendo is going all out with these projects, which hopefully bodes well for them. They aren’t ready to spill the beans on specifics just yet, however, so we’ll have to patiently wait for more news!
