Pokémon fans rejoice! As revealed in this morning’s Pokémon-based Nintendo Direct, players will be receiving more than one starter in the upcoming Pokémon X and Y. You’ll of course get a Kalos starter — Fennekin, Froakie, or Chespin — but you’ll also get one of the original three starters at about the same time. That’s right, you’ll have access to Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur again for your time in the Kalos region.

While this is announcement is making fans the world-wide cry tears of joy, that’s not all. Those fully evolved forms of three beloved Pokémon are now known to have Mega Evolutions, and we got to see them in action. MegaCharizard, MegaBlastoise, and MegaVenusaur don’t look radically different from their standard forms (you can see them in the image gallery), but we wholly expect fan backlash. We also learned a little more about Mega Evolutions in general. Players will obtain a bracelet called the Mega Ring, which works in tandem with the Mega Stones a Pokémon has to hold to achieve their new form. A requirement for Mega Evolutions is described as a strong bond between the trainer and their Pokémon; whether or not this relates to friendship, some new bond (like Pokémon Amie), or is just an idle statement remains to be seen.

Take a look at the images of the new forms below, and tell us what you think.

Our Verdict

Drew Navarre
Name's Drew. Currently making my way through Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series and waiting for The Winds of Winter (A Song of Ice and Fire 6). I'm a subscriber to Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Universe, and Mega Man and I read Superior Spider-man when I can. I'm a pretty big Nintendo fan, but enjoy the other companies as well. As it stands, I have a Wii U and a new gaming desktop (3.5ghz processor, 2GB video card, 8GB RAM with support for 32GB) and plan on getting a PS4 in 2014. As for Xbox One, we'll see, but I'm sure I'll add it eventually.
