It’s been a long time since we’ve heard news about Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The first trailer dropped at last year’s E3, and for months after we were kept in the dark. Now, we finally have new info about Fire Emblem‘s first foray onto the Switch, and it looks very promising.

Nintendo didn’t reveal too much about the game’s plot in its original trailer. We knew of the three future heads of the titular “Three Houses”—the axe-wielding Edelgard, the lance-wielding Dimitri, and the bow-wielding Claude—and we got to see their teacher, the viewpoint character and tactician whose name and gender can be chosen by the player. Today’s new trailer showed that your character is a former mercenary who teaches at the Officer’s Academy, located in a territory un-owned by the three empires. The player gets to decide which of the three houses to ally with, and each one comes with very different characters. Your character is guided by a mysterious girl named Sothis, who only your character can see.

The gameplay, while still in-line with classic Fire Emblem flair, seems to have taken a bit of an upgrade. Units now have generic infantry to fight alongside them to give fights a much more cinematic yet realistic feel. Weapon durability makes a comeback after being absent from the previous two games. Players can now roam freely while out of battle, similar to how the dungeons worked in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. You as the teacher can customize the named units and guide them toward different classes, weapon masteries, and skillsets like horse-riding.

While originally slated for Spring, Fire Emblem: Three Houses will now launch this summer on July 26th.

Hi, I'm Mark. I'm like Statler and Waldorf if they were one person, except cuter. I'm an aspiring author, a Nintendo fanboy, and a recovering Sonic fanboy. But you can never really recover from that. I main Lucina in Smash Bros, and I think that says more about me than anything else can.
