The month of May closed to an energetic preorder trailer for Sonic Mania, featuring a sketch-styled animation directed by Sonic: MEGA DRIVE artist Tyson Hesse. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the Mania developer panel revealed that Hesse’s team has also worked on a fully animated opening for the game, just like Sonic CD before it, and that fans can look forward to seeing it live with a launch trailer before August 15th.

The wait might be over earlier than planned, but true to their word, the opening sequence to Sonic Mania has finally gone live via the Sonic social channels. Give it a watch above!

Mania‘s opening picks up right from where the preorder trailer left off, with the classic trio of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles bursting from the elevator and zipping around a technicolor world as the Hard-Boiled Heavies look on, all to the sounds of Hyper Potions’ new track “Friends.” Eagle-eyed viewers might also recognize some of the Zones highlighted within the Giant Rings, including the unveiling of two returning stages judging by their backdrops: Hydro City Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Lava Reef Zone from Sonic & Knuckles.

While the opening wasn’t expected to be online until August 14th, a probable reason behind the early upload is to combat Mania leaks unfortunately cropping up online yesterday. A fan had picked up their Nintendo Switch copy of the Collector’s Edition with a working download code from a GameStop location and threatened to spoil the game’s contents online with live-streams, even after multiple takedowns from SEGA.

Only four more days remain until Sonic Mania launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch! What do you think of the opening, and on which platform do you plan on playing the game? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
