The development of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was a long journey with lots of changes along the way, including the main character. The idea for a new puzzle game was initially pitched with Link as the main character, but eventually the Hero of Hyrule was replaced by an unlikely hero. Captain Toad made his playable debut in Super Mario 3D World, where he starred in a handful of mini-games. Eventually Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto gave the go-ahead for the Captain to receive his own game, and the result is a fantastic puzzle-solving adventure.
So what’s next for Captain Toad? Nintendo Life recently chatted with Nintendo’s Koichi Hayashida and Shinya Hiratake (the game’s producer and director, respectively) to discuss the development of the game, and they are hopeful that Captain Toad will return.
Nintendo Life: Would you like to see Captain Toad, Toadette and the other Toads appear in more of their own games in future?
Hayashida: Here in the development team we’ve really come to love Captain Toad and the Toad Brigade from Super Mario Galaxy! We’re really happy to have been able to make a game where they are the main stars. I hope we’ll be seeing them pop up in all sorts of other places in future.
Would you like to see Captain Toad return in future Nintendo games? If they can work around his inability to jump, I’d love to see him in
Super Smash Bros. some day!
