Nintendo Switch had an incredibly successful first year on the market, but it’s not without stiff competition. Sony and Microsoft are both enjoying strong sales this generation as well, and PlayStation 4 in particular has been a juggernaut. Sony’s console leads all hardware in units sold and profits generated through the first six months of 2018, but at least one analyst thinks that will change by year’s end.
The NPD Group tracks software and hardware sales in the US and releases data each month, and Mat Piscatella often gives his thoughts on past data and predictions for the future.
Back in January he predicted that Switch would be 2018’s top-selling hardware. With Sony on top at the halfway point, Piscatella has doubled down on his prediction that Switch will win out in the end.
“Driven by the launches of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo Switch will be the best-selling console of the fourth quarter in unit sales, while also elevating the platform to be the best-selling console of the year.”
— Mat Piscatella
Piscatella believes the dual threat of Pokémon and Super Smash Bros. will lead Nintendo to a strong enough holiday season that they’ll make up the distance between Switch sales and PlayStation 4 sales. Nintendo’s really bringing out the big guns for Christmas. Will it be enough to make Switch number one?
