Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has proven to be an enormous success so far for Nintendo, but no video game is perfect right from launch (at least, not these days). Nearly three weeks after release, Deluxe is now receiving its first software update that fixes minor elements of the gameplay and presentation, including an animation for the Inkling Girl character that many people actually found rather offensive.

Originally, the Inkling Girl in Deluxe pumped her right fist into the air while placing her other hand on her right bicep after she successfully attacked another racer. While many Americans probably saw this as more of a reference to the famous We Can Do It! art piece by J. Howard Miller, it turns out that there are multiple countries that use it as an offensive gesture, essentially carrying the same meaning as giving someone the finger. Nintendo has since changed the animation with this update to remove the hand on the bicep.

Here’s a full list of details for the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Version 1.1 update:

  • Opponents’ names are displayed in the rear view mirror view in online matches.
  • Invincibility period after a spin-out or crash is longer in online matches.
  • Up to two players can spectate a friend group while they wait to join.
  • “Worldwide” and “Regional” modes add players to Mirror and 200cc matches less often.
  • Can now properly create a friend lobby when you have 100 or more friends.
  • Inkling Girl’s animation has been adjusted.
  • Starting positions in online races now properly reflect the order in which players join.
  • Driver Miis now properly showing facial expressions.
  • Tournament clock now properly reflects real-world time.

What are your thoughts on these changes? Do you think it was necessary to change the Inkling Girl’s animation? Let us know in the comments below!

Hey all! I've been a gamer since I was three. I'm one of those people with gaming so ingrained in them that watching my father play Super Mario 64 is actually my first memory I can recall. I love writing too! I'm writing an original fantasy series that takes place in another universe; it may take some inspiration from some of my favorite franchises. I've been a journalist for a few years, have worked on local and national teams, and have garnered experience assigning stories, editing, writing, interviewing, hosting a television series, running a YouTube channel, and doing other stuff that's more fun to mention in conversation. Bios can drag on. Anyway, I'm super stoked to be a part of the Gamnesia team! Thanks for having me!
