10 Games We Thought Had Mind-Blowing Graphics (But Look Hilarious Now)

Back in the early 2000s, we were living in the future — or so we thought. Every time a game dropped with new visuals, we were in awe. “These graphics are insane!” we’d shout, totally convinced we were looking at the pinnacle of realism. Fast forward to now… and well, let’s just say nostalgia wears rose-colored glasses. Here are 10 games that blew our minds back then — and make us laugh now.

1. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002)
We were stunned by the open world, the creatures, the detail… but today? Everyone looks like they were made out of Play-Doh with Sharpie faces. Still legendary though.

2. GoldenEye 007 (1997)
If you squint hard enough, you might see Pierce Brosnan. But in reality, everyone’s face was just a flat texture with dead eyes and polygon fists. Iconic nonetheless.

3. Tomb Raider (1996)
Lara Croft was the icon of gaming — even if her arms were pointy and her face barely moved. Somehow, we still thought it was cutting-edge.

4. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 (2000)
We spent hours grinding pixels and jumping blocky ramps, convinced we were skating gods. Now? The low-res textures scream “early PS1 energy.”

5. Grand Theft Auto III (2001)
This one felt revolutionary. A living, breathing city… until you realize the people walked like robots and cars exploded in perfect cubes.

6. Runescape (2001)
Who needed smooth animations when you had hundreds of hours of woodcutting and dragon slaying? The graphics? Let’s just call it ‘retro chic.’

7. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (2002)
The Normandy beach scene was once hailed as one of the most realistic moments in gaming. Now, it’s like watching cardboard soldiers crawl through gray soup.

8. NBA Live 2003
We really thought these were real players. Nope. Just floating heads and oddly shiny arms. Bonus points for the slightly more animated crowds.

9. Max Payne (2001)
That slow-mo dive? Legendary. That permanently constipated face expression? Unforgettable.

10. The Sims (2000)
Our little pixel people were living their best lives. We thought the home designs looked real… until you zoom out and realize it all resembled a LEGO set.

Despite their janky looks by today’s standards, these games were pure magic when they dropped. Graphics might age, but gameplay and memories? Timeless.

So yeah, laugh at the graphics all you want — but you know you were blown away back then.
